Blending into the masses seems so much more acceptable although many of us were raised with our mother and grandmothers telling us: "baby be the best you that you can be" and not:"go out there and be like everyone else". Not saying that it's right to want to blend in just saying it's something to think about as to why folks do it. Also remember what I said some folks don't know how to be anything but be someone or something else (or something like that lol).
